Inspired by the melting ice in Lapland, Tapio Wirkkala originally created the surface in the 1960s after carving into a graphic mould. An exclusive design reflecting the thousands of hours spent perfecting the glass-blowing technique required to produce the effect. The patterns gradually change as the glass burns the surface of the wooden moulds.
Each piece of the Ultima Thule collection features a sophisticated, intriguing pattern. Though the Ultima Thule collection contributed to iittala's international breakthrough in the 1960's it still looks as modern today as it did then.
2018 marks 50 years of Tapio Wirkkala's iconic Ultima Thule, often described as the embodiment of the poetry that hides in the dark polar nights. The jubilee marks 50 years of untouched Nordic wilderness captured in the form of glassware.
Designed by Tapio Wirkkala for iittala in 1968.
